by Madonna

Renowned globally for their musically accurate yet often humorous covers of popular songs and diverse genres, all delivered in elegant dinner jackets and evening dresses with a blend of deadpan delivery and physical comedy, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, known as ‘the Ukes’ to their worldwide fans, will perform at the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr on Friday, June 7.

Since their formation by George Hinchcliffe and the late Kitty Lux in 1985, the ensemble has been captivating audiences, recording over 30 albums, and touring internationally.

The regular line-up, which since 2021 has included talented Dumfries singer-songwriter Laura Currie, along with Richie Williams, Hester Goodman, Peter Brooke-Turner, and Leisa Rea, showcases a repertoire ranging from Beethoven’s “Ode To Joy” to the Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy In The UK,” and from George Formby to Talking Heads’ classic “Psycho Killer,” with many more in between. They have been credited as a major influence in the global revival of the ukulele.

The Ukes’ performance at the Gaiety is one of only three Scottish dates on their summer tour of the UK and Germany, with the other two taking place at Easterbrook Hall in Dumfries on June 6, and Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh on June 8.
