The latest season of America’s Got Talent (AGT) unveiled an extraordinary talent during its June 25 episode. Maya Neelakantan, a 10-year-old guitar prodigy from India, delivered a mesmerizing performance that left both the judges and audience in awe.
Maya, who traveled from India for her audition, confidently walked onto the stage with her guitar and began casually strumming the opening chords of Papa Roach’s “Last Resort.” Within the first 20 seconds, AGT judge Sofía Vergara was visibly astonished by Maya’s skill. As she played, Maya smiled coyly at the crowd and judges, heightening the anticipation for what she would do next.
The young guitarist then transitioned into headbanging before showcasing her full range of impressive skills on the instrument. Even Simon Cowell, known for his stringent critiques, seemed genuinely impressed:
“You know what I love about this audition, you just weren’t expecting this. You were so shy, and you’re 10! And then you turned into, like, this rock goddess.”
Backstage, Maya’s family stood beside host Terry Crews, cheering her on as she captivated both the audience and the judges. The crowd erupted into roaring applause as she completed the challenging rock solo. All four judges—Simon Cowell, Sofía Vergara, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel—stood up and clapped for Neelakantan.
When Vergara asked if she was really just 10 years old, Maya sweetly responded, “I think so!” The energy and confidence Maya displayed prompted Vergara to call it a “perfect audition.”
Mandel inquired about her inspirations, and Neelakantan mentioned that her favorite guitarists, whom she watches on YouTube, are Adam Jones from Tool and Gary Holt of Exodus and Slayer. These influences were evident in her powerful rendition of “Last Resort.”
Heidi Klum added to the praises, saying, “I think that you are absolutely incredible. Also that you are that gutsy. Everyone in this room really loved what you just did.”
Maya’s remarkable journey extends beyond the AGT stage; she has also wowed audiences online by showcasing her talents on social media platforms, including Instagram, where she posted a captivating video of herself masterfully recreating Slayer’s renowned metal song “Raining Blood.”
Entertainment Weekly reported that this was Maya’s first time ever performing on stage. Given her extraordinary skill set and poise under pressure, Simon Cowell predicted a long career in music for her.
Maya Neelakantan’s debut in front of a live audience culminated in all four judges giving her a resounding “yes,” advancing her to the next round of the competition. Fans took to social media to praise Maya’s talent, calling her a rockstar already, with comments like “You young lady will one day be among them [greatest rock guitarists]! Rock on!!! The hall of fame awaits.” The future certainly looks bright for this budding rock goddess.
