Lukas Nelson Shares His Favorite Guitars for Acoustic Performances

by Madonna

While Willie Nelson is famously inseparable from his iconic Martin guitar, Trigger, his son Lukas Nelson prefers a more versatile approach. Unlike his father, Lukas switches between electric and acoustic guitars, depending on the performance. His collection is limited, as he only keeps the instruments he actively uses rather than amassing guitars that remain untouched.

In a recent social media post, Lukas opened up about his favorite guitars for acoustic sets, revealing that, unlike his father, he doesn’t reach for a Martin. Instead, he favors a custom-made Rockbridge guitar.

“I have quite a few guitars that I actually use,” Nelson shared. “I don’t collect them because I don’t really have a lot of space, and I don’t want them to just sit somewhere. So, usually, the guitars I have are the ones I use.”

He expressed particular admiration for Rockbridge guitars, made by luthier Brian Calhoun. Displaying a sepia-toned dreadnought, Nelson explained, “They’re acoustic guitars, and they sound amazing. I use those a lot for my acoustic sets. They’ve got really nice pickups and sound beautiful.” He also mentioned using the Rockbridge guitar during his performance with the Travelin’ McCourys at DelFest, calling the experience “real special.”

However, for those inspired by Nelson to try a Rockbridge guitar, obtaining one might be a challenge. These boutique instruments are not available in stores or online. Instead, buyers must visit the Rockbridge workshop in Charlottesville, Virginia, to commission a handmade guitar. With a small four-man team producing only about 60 guitars a year, prospective buyers should expect a waiting list for these rare instruments.
