Chie Imaizumi’s Little Big Band, Featuring Randy Brecker and Greg Gisbert

by Madonna

Renowned for her innovative compositions and vibrant energy, Japanese composer Chie Imaizumi has long been a cherished figure in Denver’s jazz scene. Known for creating music at the highest level, Imaizumi has written for legendary artists such as Randy Brecker and Greg Gisbert, both of whom will join her for these special performances. Her distinguished work extends to collaborations with the US Air Force Falconaires, Japan Air Self Defense Force Concert Band, and the Consulate General of Japan. Additionally, Imaizumi has contributed to music preparation for icons like John Clayton, Quincy Jones, Diana Krall, Paul McCartney, Leon Russell, and Jennifer Lopez. She also orchestrated music for the recent Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

While living in Denver, Chie formed a “little big band” that recorded her debut album, Unfailing Kindness, showcasing her original compositions. Each piece is deeply personal, telling stories inspired by her unique life journey. Having faced significant challenges as a woman breaking into Japan’s male-dominated music industry, Chie found support from Denver’s Gift of Jazz community, which helped her lay down roots in the U.S. As one of the first educators for Gift of Jazz’s adult education classes, she quickly won over the hearts of the Denver jazz scene. This two-night, four-show engagement marks her first return to Denver with her Little Big Band since relocating to Los Angeles. Chie is thrilled to reunite with musicians who hold a special place in her heart and to share her music once again.

Randy Brecker, a jazz legend with seven Grammy Awards, rose to fame with his brother Michael as part of the Brecker Brothers. With a career spanning over four decades, Brecker has left an indelible mark on jazz, R&B, and rock. His trumpet and flugelhorn have graced countless albums by artists ranging from James Taylor and Bruce Springsteen to Frank Zappa, Steely Dan, and Jaco Pastorius.

Denver’s own trumpet sensation, Greg Gisbert, also plays a key role in this collaboration. Having worked closely with Chie on both of her albums and producing her debut, Greg’s passion for this project is unmistakable. He was instrumental in bringing together Chie and Randy Brecker for this long-awaited reunion. His performance, filled with emotional depth, elevates the music to new heights. With Randy and Greg leading a stellar “little big band,” these concerts promise to be unforgettable. As local writer Norman Provizer once said in Rocky Mountain News, “If you can depart after hearing a set of Imaizumi’s music without joy in your heart and swing in your head, you need to check yourself for a pulse.”
