During a recent performance, David Gilmour faced an unexpected challenge when his guitar strap snapped. Gilmour is currently on a world tour promoting his latest solo album, Luck and Strange. While performing at the Circus Maximus in Rome, Italy, on September 28, he encountered a common issue that many guitarists face when his strap suddenly broke in two during the song “Comfortably Numb.”
Being an experienced musician, Gilmour didn’t let this mishap derail his performance. He continued singing the chorus alongside the audience while attempting to reposition the strap. Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain, leading him to signal his guitar tech for assistance. The tech quickly brought out another Fender signature guitar for him to use.
With the new guitar in hand, Gilmour seamlessly transitioned back into the performance, just in time to deliver the iconic solo from “Comfortably Numb.” Interestingly, there’s speculation that the broken strap may have belonged to Jimi Hendrix, acquired by Gilmour’s wife, Polly, at an auction in 2006. If this is indeed Hendrix’s strap, there remains a chance that it could be repaired.
