Flutist Arin Sarkissian’s journey to becoming a classical musician is anything but conventional. Growing up with a lack of enthusiasm for classical music and failing to secure a spot in his high school’s symphony orchestra, Sarkissian’s success as the 2024 Michael Measures Prize winner highlights the influence of strong role models and his genuine passion for music and performance.
Sarkissian expresses deep gratitude to several key figures in his musical education, including professors Leone Buyse from Rice University and Jim Walker from LA’s Colburn School, as well as his first flute teacher, Lilit Hovhannisyan, and mentor Christinia Yoo, affectionately known as “Tina Teacher.” Currently serving as the Principal Flutist of the Victoria Symphony, Sarkissian recalls last season’s performances of Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony, Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony, and Brahms’s 4th Symphony as particularly unforgettable experiences. He aspires to expand the role of music in society by addressing “finances, legalities, cross-industry collaboration, education initiatives, and more.” This ambitious vision demonstrates his awareness of the broader impact music can have on the community.
This past year has been notable for Sarkissian, particularly through performances like his tour with harpist Kaitlin Miller as part of the chamber group Duo Duoro and his involvement in Pacific Opera Victoria’s production of Osvaldo Golijov’s Ainadamar. “Performing helps me feel like I can be a kid again!” he shares, expressing his gratitude for the joy music brings him. Looking ahead, he eagerly anticipates his upcoming season with the Victoria Symphony and the release of his first album, Evocations, alongside Canadian pianist Paul Williamson. Sarkissian hopes these endeavors will further allow him to harness the power of music to create “impact beyond the stage.”
