Saxophonist Grace Kelly, known for her extraordinary talent, returns to the Berkshires to conclude Berkshire Jazz’s weeklong 2024 Fall Jazz Sprawl with a special concert titled “Grace Kelly with Strings: At the Movies.” The performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 13, at Shakespeare & Company.
In this concert, Kelly will perform alongside her quartet, enhanced by the Kids 4 Harmony advanced ensemble, a free classical music initiative for Berkshire youth from under-resourced communities. The young musicians also collaborate with renowned artists like Emanuel Ax at Tanglewood every summer.
With 15 albums to her name, including her latest release, “Grace Kelly with Strings: At the Movies,” Kelly integrates her passion for movie music with inspiration drawn from Charlie Parker’s iconic “Charlie Parker with Strings.” This album features reimagined songs from popular films such as Disney classics, “Back to the Future,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” along with new arrangements of Billie Eilish’s “No Time To Die.”
Reflecting on her early exposure to Parker’s music, Kelly shares that she first heard his work at the age of 10 when her teacher introduced her to “My Little Suede Shoes.” Captivated by the tune, she performed it at her first public concert as a bandleader at age 12, even tap dancing while playing after being dared to do so.
Kelly expresses her admiration for Parker’s music, stating, “I loved the melody of ‘My Little Suede Shoes.’ It’s one of his catchiest tunes and perfect for beginners since the harmony isn’t too complex.” Her exploration of Parker’s music led her to learn standards like “Blues for Alice” and “Ornithology,” which helped her grasp the bebop language.
Regarding her latest jazz album, Kelly distinguishes between studio preparation and live performances. She enjoys the detailed focus of studio sessions, where she can layer takes and experiment with sound. In contrast, live gigs emphasize creating an engaging experience in the moment, where audience interaction through singing, dancing, and speaking becomes essential.
When asked about her preferences, Kelly affirms her love for both live performances and studio work. Each offers unique benefits, but live shows hold a special place in her heart due to the audience connection and energy they provide. Over time, she has also grown to appreciate the control and creativity available in the studio.
As an educator, Kelly finds that teaching helps clarify concepts for herself while being inspired by her students, many of whom are exploring their musical creativity across various genres.
If given the chance to master another instrument, Kelly expresses a desire to play the guitar, appreciating its sound and versatility.
In her upcoming performance with Kids 4 Harmony, Kelly hopes the audience will be inspired by the young musicians and recognize the impact of such programs, which can be life-changing for students by enhancing their musicianship and building confidence.
