Leif Segerstam, the internationally renowned Finnish conductor, violinist, pianist, and composer, has passed away at the age of 80 following a brief illness, as reported by YLE.
Born in 1944, Segerstam’s distinguished career began with studies at the Sibelius Academy and The Juilliard School. His conducting journey took him to prominent opera houses in Helsinki, Stockholm, and Berlin. Throughout his career, he held prestigious positions, including chief conductor roles with the Austrian and Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestras and the Royal Swedish Opera, as well as directing the Finnish National Opera.
Segerstam was notably the chief conductor emeritus of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and held honorary positions with several other renowned orchestras, including the Malmö Opera, Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, and Turku Philharmonic Orchestra.
As a guest conductor, Segerstam worked with leading orchestras worldwide, including the Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Vienna Radio Symphony, Toronto Symphony, and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. He was a familiar presence at international opera houses and festivals and played a key role in promoting the music of Sibelius during the 2015 anniversary celebrations.
Segerstam’s vast discography includes numerous recordings, featuring contemporary compositions and the complete symphonies of Mahler, Sibelius, and Nielsen, among others. He was also an accomplished composer, having written 371 symphonies. From 1997 to 2013, Segerstam served as a professor of conducting at the Sibelius Academy.
Throughout his career, Segerstam received several accolades, including the 1999 Nordic Council Music Prize, the 2003 Swedish Cultural Foundation’s Prize for Music, the 2004 Finnish State Prize for Music, and the prestigious Sibelius Medal in 2005.
Conductor Rune Bergmann, a former student of Segerstam, paid tribute to his mentor on Facebook, writing, “Very sad news that my teacher and mentor at The Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki, Leif Segerstam, has passed away. There are so many stories and memories that will live forever. Leif Segerstam was so much that it would be impossible to explain, but I would for sure never have been a conductor without him. Thank you for the music, Maestro, and rest in peace.”
