Erica Synths has announced an exciting new drum synth module called Perkons Voice, which will integrate the hybrid drum engine of the Perkons HD-01 drum machine into the Eurorack format.
In recent weeks, several smaller synthesizer events have taken place, including Knobcon, SynthFest UK, Machina Bristonica, and Montreal Knob Session 2024. Erica Synths participated in the last two events, where founder Girts Ozolins shared some notable updates. In addition to revealing that the physical modeling synthesizer Steampipe is nearing release, Girts surprised attendees by introducing the drum synth engine from the Perkons HD-01 drum machine as an upcoming module.
Perkons Voice is designed as a new drum synth voice module rooted in the hybrid synthesizer technology of the Perkons drum machine. Like its desktop counterpart, the engine is hybrid, featuring various algorithms combined with an analog filter and overdrive.
The module includes an array of algorithms, each offering three distinct modes:
Fold Drum 1: No Transient, Noise Transient, Pulse Transient
Wavetable Drum: Wavetable 1, WT2, WT3
Simple Drum: Waveform 1, W2, W3
Fold Drum 2: No Transient, Noise Transient, Pulse Transient
Complex Drum: Waveform 1, W2, W3
Resonant Drums: Resonant Snare, Resonant Bass Drum, Noise/Tone Drum
Slap: Mode 1, 2, 3
Karplus: Mode 1, 2, 3
Noise Hat: White Noise, Metallic Noise, Pulse Stack Noise
Noise/Tone: Mode 1, 2, 3
Acoustic Hats: Closed Hat, Open Hat, Ride
Users can easily tweak the sounds directly on the module, adjusting various parameters such as tuning, decay, and more.
In the module version, these algorithmic drums feed into an analog multimode filter that includes low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass options, all of which are fully adjustable with dedicated knobs. The signal then passes through an analog overdrive for added warmth and character.
A standout feature of the Perkons Voice is its ability to save all settings, including both digital and analog signal path components, as patches, which can be instantly recalled during performances.
Additionally, every parameter comes equipped with CV inputs for voltage control, allowing for advanced modulation possibilities, including the ability to modulate patch selection with CV. There are also inputs for triggers and accents.
Although the module has yet to be officially released, initial impressions suggest that it delivers rich and robust sounds. If priced competitively, the Perkons Voice could become a popular choice among musicians. With four of these modules, users could effectively create a modular version of the Perkons HD-01 drum machine within their Eurorack setup, making it an enticing prospect for many.
