Renowned Piano Educator John Barstow Passes Away, Leaving Lasting Legacy

by Madonna

Former students are mourning the loss of John Barstow, a highly respected former head of keyboard at the Royal College of Music. Known for his generosity, Barstow often paid out of his own pocket for students to attend performances by piano greats such as Richter at the Royal Festival Hall, ensuring they had access to world-class musical experiences.

Among his distinguished students were Barry Douglas, James Lisney, Roger Owens, Karl Lutchmayer, and Julian Jacobson.

Barstow’s own musical repertoire was vast, ranging from Byrd to Boulez, and he notably made the premiere recording of John Joubert’s piano concerto.
