The 25th edition of the International Festival of Spanish Piano Music (FIMTE) wrapped up with a captivating performance by American pianist Dena Kay Jones. Her concert, De lado a lado, held at Garrucha’s Cultural Centre, offered a musical journey through Spanish-inspired compositions, spanning from the 1500s to 20th-century avant-garde works. Jones masterfully blended historical context with her personal interpretation, engaging the audience with insightful explanations between pieces that deepened the connection to the music.
Leading up to the final performance, Jones hosted a free masterclass at the Auditorio Ciudad de Vera, welcoming aspiring pianists from the Levante region. Among the attendees were students from Vera’s Municipal School and the FIMTE Music Centre in Garrucha. The masterclass attracted a wide audience, including students, parents, and the public, as Jones provided valuable advice on piano technique, posture, and repertoire.
This year’s festival theme, Mujeres y Teclas (Women and Keys), focused on celebrating the contributions of female musicians and composers. Performances took place across the towns of Mojácar, Garrucha, and Vera, featuring international talent from the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Spain. Highlights of the festival included the world premiere of Espejo bajo el jardín by Pablo Femenia, performed by pianist Elena Mota, and Homenatge a Mompou by Elisenda Fábregas, presented by Leyla Cemiloglu.
Festival Director Luisa Morales expressed her delight with the event’s success, reflecting on the enriching experience it provided both to the performers and the local community.
