During his headlining performance at Mexico City’s Corona Capital festival over the weekend, Paul McCartney brought out Jack White and St. Vincent for an unforgettable jam session on stage, delivering an iconic Beatles moment.
McCartney was performing at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez Stadium on Sunday when St. Vincent, also known as Annie Clark, joined him on stage for a rendition of Get Back. In fan-recorded footage, Clark’s guitar can be seen blending with McCartney’s iconic sound, and the two share a kiss at the end of the song.
Clark returned during the encore for the show’s grand finale, The End, where she was joined by Jack White, both adding their electric guitar contributions. For the extended intro, the stage was packed with five guitarists: Clark, White, McCartney’s bandmates Rusty Anderson and Brian Ray, and McCartney himself, who had swapped his Hofner bass for a six-string guitar.
McCartney had fun orchestrating the guitar solos, randomly pointing at band members to take their turn, while also playing a few solos of his own. The guitar exchange and pyrotechnics eventually led to the song’s powerful conclusion, complete with harmonies, much to the crowd’s delight.
The performance in Mexico City marked the final stop of McCartney’s South American leg of his Got Back tour. A standout moment in the tour occurred during his October show in Montevideo, Uruguay, where he performed Now and Then, the supposedly ‘final’ Beatles track. Released the previous year, the song became a hit, reaching Number One in the UK charts, making it the Beatles’ 18th chart-topping single. The track was pieced together from a demo John Lennon recorded in the late 1970s, with additional work by the surviving Beatles in the 1990s, and new drums and vocals by McCartney and Ringo Starr.
McCartney now has a brief respite before heading back to Europe for a short tour in December, which will culminate in two performances at London’s O2 Arena on December 18 and 19.
