The 2024 National String Competition concluded on December 16 at the Westlake Girls High School Event Centre in Auckland, New Zealand.
Violinist Hayden Chiu, 14, took home the NZ$5,000 first prize, along with a performance opportunity with the Auckland Philharmonia and a recital at the Lewis Eady Steinway Showroom. He also earned the NZ$500 award for the best performance of a New Zealand work. Currently a student at Auckland Grammar School, Chiu studies the violin with Stephen Larsen and Robin Wilson.
The second prize of NZ$3,000 was awarded to violinist Sarah Lee, 20, while the third prize of NZ$1,000 went to cellist Ryan Yeh, 13. The NZ$1,000 prize for the best performance of a classical sonata was presented to cellist Hyun Jae Lee.
The final round of the competition was adjudicated by violinist Dene Olding.
