Lankao County in Henan Province, central China, has established itself as a leading global center for the production and export of traditional Chinese musical instruments. These instruments, crafted from locally sourced paulownia wood, undergo meticulous inspections by skilled tuners before being shipped to over 40 countries, according to People’s Daily Online, a partner of TV BRICS.
Paulownia wood, known for its fast growth, lightweight structure, and fine grain, is highly prized for creating pure, resonant tones. These attributes make it an exceptional material for crafting soundboards in musical instruments.
Capitalizing on its abundant natural resources and distinctive regional features, Lankao has spent decades cultivating this industry, positioning itself as a significant player in the global music market.
Currently, the county hosts more than 200 musical instrument manufacturers, employing around 18,000 workers. The region specializes in producing over 20 types of traditional Chinese instruments, including the guzheng, guqin, and pipa.
Lankao’s industry boasts a fully integrated production chain, covering every stage from paulownia cultivation and material preparation to instrument design, manufacturing, and international distribution.
