Guitars, keyboards, harmonicas, and trumpets share more than their role as musical instruments—they have the potential to become meaningful holiday gifts that keep on giving for years to come.
According to Spencer Scott, co-owner of Guzzardo Performance Music, there’s something magical about gifting an instrument, especially to young learners.
“There’s something special about making that first sound on an instrument,” Scott said. “You see this spark of joy, like, ‘This is cool. This is something I can do.’”
This holiday season, both children and adults are experiencing that joy as they pick up an instrument for the first time, often fulfilling long-held dreams.
“It’s one of those wish-list items,” Scott explained. “The cool-looking guitar or another instrument—it’s a big deal. It’s something that stays with people for the rest of their lives.”
Scott emphasized that taking lessons with an experienced teacher or professional musician can greatly enhance the learning process, whether someone is just starting or pursuing music for fun.
“Learning from a book can be tough for some people,” Scott noted. “Having someone who knows what they’re doing can make all the difference. They can point out what you’re doing wrong before bad habits set in.”
Even if a budding musician doesn’t turn professional, their first instrument often holds a special place in their heart.
“For me, it all started with a clarinet I got from here,” Scott shared. “That clarinet was my main instrument when I went to school to study music. It all began with that first instrument from Guzzardo’s.”
Musical instruments, whether for beginners or seasoned players, are more than just gifts—they’re gateways to lifelong memories and creativity.
