At just six years old, Sofiat Wuraola Olaide, also known as @ayanwura on Instagram, is making waves as one of Nigeria’s youngest female traditional talking drummers.
With her extraordinary talent, Sofiat has captivated audiences, building a following of over 60,000 fans on Instagram and receiving recognition well beyond her years.
Sofiat’s drumming journey began at the age of three, when she started playing on her own at home. Recognizing her innate ability, her mother, Morenikeji Olaide, enrolled her in a drumming school when she turned four.
Under the mentorship of her instructor, Mr. Samson Adeleke, Sofiat has refined her skills. He describes her as “an intelligent and focused little girl.”
Her talent has opened doors to significant opportunities, including a role in a Nollywood movie and a performance at Nigeria’s presidential inauguration.
Sofiat also wowed audiences at the Day of the African Child celebration in Lagos, where she performed both solo and alongside Africa’s first professional female gangan drummer, Aralola Olumuyiwa (Ara).
Her remarkable skills have made her a rising star in Nigeria’s cultural and entertainment scene, with many predicting she will become one of the most influential drummers of her generation.
Despite her tender age, Sofiat has big dreams. She envisions performing on global stages like London’s O2 Arena while pursuing a career in law. “I just found myself loving and playing drums. It’s a gift from God,” she says, determined to inspire others with her artistry.
Sofiat’s story highlights Africa’s rich cultural heritage and the importance of nurturing young talent. Her journey is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and family support in making dreams come true.
