Sophie Lloyd expressed her discomfort with being referred to as a “female guitarist,” highlighting how the growing presence of women in rock today makes such labels feel outdated.
As the rock and metal communities have become more inclusive, the practice of categorizing musicians by their gender has slowly faded. In a recent interview on The Mistress Carrie Podcast, Lloyd shared her frustration with the term, revealing that being introduced as a “female guitarist” once irritated her, as it seemed to separate her from male musicians:
“I still think people would generally refer to me as a female guitarist. It can be annoying that it always has to have the ‘female’ put in front of it. It feels like it’s kind of limiting your abilities. Like, ‘Oh, we won’t compare you to the guys.'”
The guitarist also noted the increasing number of women working across various levels of the music industry, acknowledging that people are beginning to recognize the value of this change:
“There’s so much girl power now, in rock and in music in general. So many session musicians I know are also women, especially in bigger bands. And generally, people are leaning more towards that, because – I don’t know, women have a really cool energy as well. It brings something kind of new to the genre. And I guess people are finally starting to see that and appreciate it, which means more women are getting into it because they’re seeing it more. So yeah, it’s definitely taken over, and it’s about time.”
Lloyd also touched on how gear companies are adapting to this shift, noting that more companies are now featuring female artists and fostering greater equality:
“I think it’s really cool that more companies are starting to do that, featuring female artists for things, and just incorporating them and making it way more equal, as it should be. And I think it’s definitely a new wave. And again, it just makes it so much more accessible for people to start. They feel like, ‘Oh, I already feel included in this community.'”
