On January 18, a YouTube video titled “SM Guitar Trainer Tells Idol Stories | Guitarist Lee Seung-yeop Interview Part 1” was released, revealing behind-the-scenes details about aespa’s Winter’s dedication to guitar playing.
The video featured Lee Seung-yeop, a guitarist who has trained various K-pop idols, including Winter. He addressed the previous accusations that the aespa member had faked her guitar performance during a concert.
The instructor recalled, “Last year, while Winter was preparing for a concert, she had a segment where she performed a guitar piece.” He shared how Winter’s commitment to learning the guitar was so intense that her hands bled from the effort. This, he said, made him frustrated to hear the criticism accusing the idol of pretending to play.
“What really upset me was that the public only sees the artist on stage, without understanding the hard work and struggles that go into it,” Lee lamented. “Today, with the rise of technology, people zoom in on performances on YouTube, analyze hands, point out mistakes, and accuse artists of ‘hand-syncing’ or faking their performances.”
He defended Winter against these claims, explaining, “When I saw these reactions, I felt hurt. As her teacher, yes, it’s crucial to perform the guitar piece correctly. But preparing for that concert was not just about the guitar. She had to prepare for the dancing, singing, and everything else. Even professional guitarists would find it tough to perform live under such circumstances. But people only saw a small part of her efforts and exaggerated their criticisms. It was disheartening for me to watch.”
In conclusion, the instructor expressed regret for not addressing the criticisms sooner, saying, “I regret not spotting these reactions earlier and handling them better. It’s something I’ve reflected on recently.”
