Nicko McBrain, the longtime drummer for Iron Maiden, announced at the end of 2024 that he will no longer be performing live with the legendary heavy metal band. This decision marks the end of an era, as McBrain has been a vital part of Iron Maiden’s distinctive sound and stage presence for over 40 years. His departure is a significant moment for fans worldwide.
In an exclusive interview conducted on January 29th at his restaurant, Rock N’ Roll Ribs in Coral Springs, Florida, McBrain shared insights into the factors that led to his decision to step down from Maiden’s drum throne and what the future holds for him.
Reflecting on the start of 2025, McBrain expressed mixed emotions about stepping away from touring. He revealed that the decision was made during the North American leg of Iron Maiden’s tour, acknowledging that while it was initially an easy choice, it became more emotionally complex as time went on.
Discussing the physical and mental challenges he faced, particularly following a stroke, McBrain admitted that maintaining the demanding touring schedule became increasingly difficult. Despite his dedication, he felt unable to give 100% to his performances, which ultimately influenced his decision.
McBrain had contemplated retirement as early as 2023 but chose to complete the “Future Past” tour before making his final decision. By the time the North American tour concluded, he recognized that the time had come to step away.
Looking ahead, McBrain plans to focus on several personal and professional projects. He intends to dedicate more time to his Rock N’ Roll Ribs restaurant, engage with fans through impromptu jam sessions, and expand his work with Drum One, his music store in England. Additionally, he is involved in new design projects with the British Drum Company and is considering small-scale touring with his cover band, Titanium Tart.
Regarding the possibility of writing an autobiography, McBrain confirmed that discussions are already underway.
Before concluding the interview, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to Iron Maiden fans for their unwavering support and dedication. He acknowledged the love and encouragement he received, particularly after announcing his departure, and reassured fans that he looks forward to pursuing new musical endeavors.
