Swedish dark metal pioneers Katatonia have announced the departure of their founding guitarist, Anders Nyström.
Vocalist Jonas Renkse shared the news on social media earlier on March 17, stating:
“Anders Nyström and I are going our separate ways. This is not a decision we took lightly, but in order for everyone to thrive and move forward with their own creative directions and personal schedules, this has become the realistic path forward.
Anders and I started the band in 1991, and his influence on the band’s signature sound is undeniable.
As difficult as this news is, it’s a reminder that life sometimes interferes with our best-laid plans. I wish Anders nothing but the best for the future.”
Nyström co-founded Katatonia in 1991 and was a driving force in shaping the band’s identity, contributing to their 1993 debut Dance of December Souls and their most recent album, Sky Void of Stars (2023). With this significant change, it remains to be seen where Katatonia will go from here.
