In a recent interview with Riff X’s “Metal XS,” Duff McKagan shared his admiration for his longtime bandmate Slash, discussing their enduring relationship and the guitarist’s unparalleled talent. McKagan, known for his roles in both GUNS N’ ROSES and VELVET REVOLVER, expressed his deep appreciation for Slash’s musical prowess and the unique bond they share.
Reflecting on their journey together, McKagan highlighted the challenges they faced, creating a “survivors brotherhood” born out of shared experiences. He marvelled at Slash’s ability to infuse spontaneity into every performance, emphasizing the guitarist’s extraordinary skill in never playing a song or solo the same way twice.
“I still marvel nightly playing with him because he never plays a song or a solo the same every night, any night, any given night,” McKagan stated. “It’s always different, always something I’m, like, ‘Dude, where did you come up with that in the last 48 hours? We just played two nights ago. Now you’re playing some completely different theme and they’re all cool.'”
McKagan continued to express his respect for Slash’s creativity, emphasizing the guitarist’s influence on his own musical journey. He highlighted how watching Slash’s chord choices during performances contributed to his own growth as a guitarist.
“He’s a radical fucking dude. And I can’t say enough about him,” McKagan concluded, praising Slash’s unique and dynamic approach to music.
The enduring partnership between Duff McKagan and Slash has not only shaped the sound of iconic bands but also continues to inspire fans globally. As GUNS N’ ROSES recently released a new single titled “The General,” the legendary duo’s impact on the world of rock and roll remains as powerful as ever.
