In an exciting development, the Simmons Center has acquired a trophy case to exhibit remarkable items from the Hall of Fame. Among the notable pieces to be enshrined is a significant contribution from David B. Hooten, a native of Duncan and a trumpeter of exceptional acclaim.
Hooten’s musical journey began at the tender age of nine when Merle Brandon, owner of Brandon’s Music Store and an accomplished trumpeter himself, recognized Hooten’s prodigious talent. Brandon generously provided lessons to Hooten, refraining from charging him for a single session. This nurturing mentorship laid the foundation for Hooten’s illustrious trumpet career.
A pinnacle moment for Hooten occurred in 1999 when he was invited to perform at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II, as revealed by organizers. Following his performance, Hooten had a rare audience with His Holiness, engaging in an Italian conversation about the recent tornado that had devastated Oklahoma. The Pope, expressing concern, blessed Hooten and his trumpets, requesting him to extend the blessing to all Oklahomans. The very trumpet that resonated with “Amazing Grace” during this momentous occasion will find a permanent place in the Simmons Center’s trophy case.
