The Calgary Philharmonic has terminated the employment of principal oboist Alex Klein and principal clarinetist Slavko Popovic following an external investigation spanning a month, delving into what were described as ‘deeply troubling comments’ made online.
Allegations suggest that the remarks made were disrespectful towards women and minorities.
The orchestra and the musicians involved have chosen not to elaborate further on the matter.
Both principal positions have been listed as ‘unfilled’ on the Calgary Philharmonic’s official website.
Popovic is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, while Klein, formerly a principal oboist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, relinquished his position due to focal dystonia.
The Calgary Philharmonic is under the direction of Norwegian conductor Rune Bergmann.
