Rhys Wynne-Jones, 32, who was filmed playing piano at St. Mary’s Church during a difficult night on the streets, has revealed himself as the mystery musician. Seeking refuge at NightChurch Penzance after experiencing homelessness, Rhys, whose performance of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” captivated volunteers and visitors alike, shared his story with SWNS Reporter Elizabeth Hunter.
“I had become homeless, and I was living on the streets – and I’d been having a really bad night,” Rhys said. “My mental health was going haywire, and I didn’t know what to do.”
Rhys, who began playing piano at age 12 as a way to cope with challenges including bullying and abuse, found solace in music. He was pleasantly surprised when his impromptu performance at the church garnered widespread attention after a volunteer posted a video online.
“The reaction to the video has really helped boost my self-esteem,” Rhys shared. “When people wanted to come and listen to me, and were enjoying what they were hearing, it cheered me up.”
Encouraged by the positive response, Rhys decided to embrace his talent and will perform a special charity concert at St. Mary’s Church on July 20 at 7:30pm. The concert aims to raise funds for NightChurch Penzance, a cause close to Rhys’s heart despite offers to profit directly from the event.
“I’d made a lot of friends in the homeless community, and I could see they needed a lot more help than I did,” Rhys explained.
Since the video went viral, Rhys has secured sheltered accommodation through the charity St. Petrocs and is optimistic about his future. He hopes the concert will challenge stereotypes about homelessness and inspire others facing similar challenges.
“Even though I am in this situation and it’s knocked me down, I’m getting back up again,” Rhys said. “I want to make the most of the gifts that the universe has given me.”
