Radam Schwartz, renowned in the jazz community as a top organist, has consistently revitalized the traditions of hard bop and soul jazz through his leadership in the genre. His extensive collaborations include legends like Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis and Al Hibbler, marking his profound influence and expertise.
Beyond his prowess on organ and piano, Schwartz shines as a skilled arranger-composer and influential jazz educator. His latest endeavor, “Saxophone Quartet Music,” features a distinctive lineup: former Jazz Institute of New Jersey students Marcus G. Miller on soprano saxophone, Irwin Hall on alto saxophone, Anthony Ware on tenor saxophone, and Max Schweiger on baritone saxophone.
The album opens with Miller’s soprano saxophone leading on “Let’s Hear It For The Boy,” accompanied rhythmically by the other saxophonists. “Sway In Rinc.in” showcases Schweiger’s rhythmic riff alongside compelling contributions from the ensemble, including guitarist Misha Josephs as a guest artist. Hall takes center stage in “The Ancients,” while the soulful “With These Hands,” featuring Carrie Jackson’s vocals, begins with Schwartz’s original composition “Hands.” “Validation,” a lively piece borrowing chord changes from Charlie Parker’s “Confirmation,” adds a boppish flair. The album concludes with the celebratory “As Long As You’re Remembered,” featuring Andrew Atkinson on percussion, a ballad honoring Newark jazz legends who inspired Schwartz early on, and a heartfelt rendition of “My Ship.”
Born and raised in New York City, Schwartz initially played saxophone and keyboards before settling on piano. His early career included collaborations with Charlie Mariano, Jimmy Ford, and the New Jersey Contemporary Orchestra, eventually transitioning to organ and touring with Arthur Prysock. Schwartz has since released ten albums as a leader, contributed to over 40 as a sideman, and remains deeply engaged as an organist, educator, and arranger-composer.
“Saxophone Quartet Music” represents a unique addition to Radam Schwartz’s discography, showcasing his innovative compositions for an unconventional ensemble while delivering vibrant performances and distinctive musical textures.
