Dirty Three Returns with ‘Love Changes Everything’: A Blend of Aggression and Transcendence

by Madonna

Australian instrumental trio Dirty Three return after 12 years with a new album that melds violin, guitar, and drums into a landscape of distorted yet wistful beauty.

On their 10th studio album, Dirty Three showcase their distinctive style, combining Warren Ellis’s raw-edged violin, often treated with distortion, Mick Turner’s evocative guitar work, and Jim White’s jazz-inflected drumming. Despite their individual pursuits – Ellis with Nick Cave, Turner solo and collaborative, and White contributing to various projects – their collective synergy remains potent. The album features six tracks all titled Love Changes Everything, each layering upon the last to deepen its emotional resonance. The band’s signature blend of rough-hewn textures opens the album, while introspective moments in the middle section highlight delicate, plucked melodies. The culmination arrives with tracks V and VI, where Ellis’s violin soars above the band’s dynamic interplay, reaching intense crescendos that define their sound.
