Sonny Kenn, the iconic guitarist known for his ringing tones, continues to dazzle audiences after six decades in the music scene. Although now residing in Florida, Kenn makes regular visits to his old stomping grounds. This weekend, catch him live on Saturday, July 6, at Barnacle Bill’s in Rumson, and on Sunday, July 7, at the Chubby Pickle in Highlands.
Kenn’s musical journey began in 1965 with Sonny and the Starfires, marking the start of his legendary career. At 75, he attributes his enduring energy and cool demeanor to his diet.
“I’ve been a vegetarian since I was 21,” Kenn revealed. “About nine or ten years ago, I switched to a vegan diet, cutting out dairy, cheese, and eggs. Staying healthy has been a priority for me, and I think it’s helped me keep going.”
Renowned for his distinctive twangy guitar style and vibrant reverb, Kenn has set the standard for Jersey Shore rock. Over the years, he’s collaborated with notable musicians like Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez from the E Street Band and Southside Johnny on bass. Joining Kenn this weekend are Chris Plunkett on bass, George Evans on guitar, and Vic Bayers on drums.
Even Bruce Springsteen, a longtime admirer, hailed Kenn as an Asbury Park legend. In his memoir “Born to Run,” Springsteen reminisced about encountering Kenn at the Hullabaloo Club in Asbury Park, praising his Chuck Berry-inspired rockabilly blues and timeless cool.
