Yelfris Valdés, a Cuban composer and trumpet player, began his musical journey at the age of 8, delving into classical music. His talent quickly propelled him into professional tours worldwide by the age of 16. At 25, he graduated with top honors from The College of Arts in Havana, solidifying his foundation in music.
Valdés’s career flourished as he collaborated with esteemed Cuban musicians, such as Buena Vista Social Club, Omara Portuondo, and Sierra Maestra. During his decade-long tenure with Sierra Maestra, he refined his skills in Cuban improvisation and intricate rhythms, performing in over 50 countries. Notably, his compositions contributed to the band’s Grammy nomination for Best Tropical Album in 2010.
In 2014, Valdés relocated to London, where his versatility as a trumpet player garnered attention. He collaborated with international icons like Madonna and The Clash, as well as acclaimed artists such as Chucho Valdés and Damon Albarn’s African Express.
Valdés continued to make significant contributions to the UK music scene, including projects under Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Records. In 2018, he released the EP The World Of Eshu Dina, celebrating Yoruba traditions and showcasing his diverse influences.
Building on the success of his EP, Valdés released his latest project For the Ones… on October 4th, 2023, through Música Macondo Records. This album merges classical, jazz, and electronica influences, enriched with Yoruba chants and live instrumentation.
Inspired by his Yoruba beliefs, Valdés aims to convey positive energy and truths through his music, bridging cultural and spiritual dimensions. The album opens with ‘Canto Congo,’ a tribute to his Central African heritage, exemplifying his artistic depth and cultural resonance.
