At Euro 2024, there’s a standout star whom fans from every team are rooting for — and he’s not even a footballer.

Andre Schnura, a saxophonist from Germany, has captured hearts across the tournament, captivating crowds in fan zones with his delightful performances of popular tunes.

Now, like the eight teams still in contention, Schnura is asking one question: Can he make it to the final?

Thus far, Schnura has entertained fans exclusively in fan zones near the tournament stadiums, showcasing his talent both on the streets and in organized events.

His performances have earned him acclaim comparable to that of Epic Sax Guy, the Moldovan saxophonist renowned for his Eurovision performance in 2010.

German media outlets have joined fans in petitioning UEFA and Euro 2024 organizers to include Schnura in the tournament’s closing ceremony at Berlin’s Olympiastadion, just before the final on July 14.

With videos of Schnura already featured on UEFA and the German soccer federation’s social media channels, it seems his talent has not gone unnoticed.

Even members of the German national team have become fans of Schnura’s saxophone prowess. Niclas Füllkrug, a popular figure in the squad despite his substitute role, expressed admiration for Schnura’s performances to reporters.

Thomas Mueller, a longtime star of the national team, also thanked Schnura for his support, applauding him for doing a “super job.”

Reports indicate that Schnura plans to be in the fan zone for Germany’s quarterfinal clash with Spain in Stuttgart, despite the 260-mile distance.

Schnura, though humbled by the sudden attention, has maintained a low profile offstage, declining interviews and preferring to let his music speak for itself.

Professionally trained in music and sustaining himself through gigs, teaching, and instrument making, Schnura’s recent loss of a regular income before Euro 2024 inadvertently provided him with the opportunity to perform for football fans.

With nearly a million followers on social media, Schnura has announced a seven-date tour later this year.

His music resonates perfectly with the tournament atmosphere, aligning with the tastes of football enthusiasts much like Germany’s top scorer, Jamal Musiala.

In contrast to the modern trends, Schnura opts for a classic look, often sporting a retro jersey reminiscent of Germany’s 1990 World Cup victory, as worn by legendary striker Rudi Voeller, now the national team program director.

Decked with sunglasses and a cigarette behind his ear, Schnura exudes a performer’s aura, his face often adorned with the German flag like many passionate fans.

His musical repertoire, including favorites like Gala’s “Freed From Desire,” Belling’s “Samba De Janeiro,” and Peter Schilling’s “Major Tom,” resonates deeply with the football crowd.

Should Germany advance to the semifinals, expect to see Schnura in Munich and possibly Dortmund, his hometown, for the subsequent match.

As for Berlin and the final, Schnura shares the ambition of all players — reaching the pinnacle. Only time will tell if he achieves his goal.
