The Henley Symphony Orchestra’s recent concert showcased three distinct orchestral pieces, each offering a unique musical journey. Opening with Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, composed amidst Norway’s quest for independence, the orchestra beautifully conveyed the suite’s varied tales, from bride abductions to the iconic “Hall of the Mountain King.” Led by conductor Jacques Cohen, the orchestra’s performance resonated with lyrical Morning strings and poignant Åse’s Death passages, culminating in an impressive diminuendo.

Highlighting the evening was clarinettist Emma Johnson’s remarkable rendition of Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E flat major. Johnson’s virtuosity was evident from her dramatic high F entry, effortlessly navigating the concerto’s Allegro, Romanza, and Andante con Alla Polacca movements with technical brilliance and musicality. Her performance, marked by dazzling runs and heartfelt lyricism, captivated the audience, earning her resounding applause and smiles shared with the orchestra.

Following intermission, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9 in E flat major provided a contrast with its complex portrayal of Russia’s wartime victory. Composed in 1945 amidst significant losses, the symphony’s march-like first movement and haunting Moderato reflected both victory and mourning. Henley Symphony Orchestra, under Cohen’s direction, tackled the symphony’s demanding passages with enthusiasm, culminating in a powerful conclusion to a memorable evening of music.
