by Madonna

Over 50 learners, both children and adults, from Kirkbymoorside, Malton White Star, and Stape bands were invited to join Swinton & District Excelsior Band for a day-long event led by Shepherd Group principal cornet Sean Chandler.

The Shepherd Group Brass Band, based in York, is one of the largest brass band organizations in the country. It comprises five ensembles and over 150 players, ranging from beginners to semi-professionals. The organization is dedicated to community involvement, maintaining close ties with several charities, and encouraging new players of all ages to embrace the rewarding hobby of brass band music.

Swinton band secretary Tracey Popham explained, “It all started from a casual conversation between Swinton & District Excelsior Band MD Bob Stradling and Sean, where Bob invited Sean to play some solos with us. This conversation evolved into a Brass Band Week masterclass and solo showcase held at The Milton Rooms in Malton.”

“Sean is quickly gaining recognition as an exceptional cornet and trumpet soloist, a skilled teacher, and an expert British Sign Language interpreter who promotes music education for the deaf,” Tracey added.

She continued, “Sean skillfully guided the workshop band through their performances for the afternoon concert, offering valuable tips on practicing and breathing techniques.”

The morning session featured “open mic” slots for solo performances, opportunities to try conducting, and some bucket drumming led by Jasmine Templeman.

The afternoon concert kicked off with an energetic performance of “Bandology.” Sean impressed the audience with his renditions of “Facilita,” “Lazy Trumpeter,” and “Georgia On My Mind.”

Four members of the Swinton Band’s cornet section joined Sean for a lively performance of “Trumpets Wild,” while the Training Band, under the direction of Steve Popham, presented three numbers.

Tracey concluded, “The workshop band performed pieces including Abba and Doctor Who, culminating in a jubilant finale where all 70-plus musicians, conducted by Sean, lifted the spirits with a rousing version of ‘Sweet Caroline.'”

“We extend our gratitude to the North Yorkshire Inspire Fund for their financial support, fittingly named for such an inspiring event. Thanks also to the volunteers at The Milton Rooms for providing an excellent venue and to all those who helped make the day a success. We look forward to hosting more events in the future based on the positive feedback we’ve received.”

Founded in 1936, Swinton & District Excelsior Band is located in Swinton. The band welcomes experienced players across all sections and has a thriving beginners group and training band, making it accessible to complete beginners as well.
