Grammy Award-winning violinist Maxim Vengerov will make his debut in New Zealand with a performance in Wellington this August.
Recognized as one of the world’s most sought-after soloists, Vengerov is celebrated for his exceptional talent and distinct sound. The Sunday Times praised him as a violinist who “reaches places others cannot,” noting his “communicative, colorful, and technically near-miraculous playing” and a sound known for its “seductive richness.”
Vengerov’s impressive career began at the age of five when he first started playing the violin. He gained international acclaim in 1984 by winning the prestigious Wieniawski Competition at just 10 years old. His journey from a child prodigy to an acclaimed soloist and conductor has been marked by remarkable achievements.
The opportunity to hear Vengerov perform live is a rare treat, particularly as he will present Sibelius’ magnificent Violin Concerto during his New Zealand appearances. This concerto is renowned for its technical challenges and dramatic intensity, making it one of the most celebrated works for violin. Vengerov’s visit is part of a tour through Australasia, which includes recitals in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.
In Wellington, Vengerov will join the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) for the Maxim Vengerov Plays Sibelius concert on August 15 at the Michael Fowler Centre. He will be accompanied by the renowned conductor André de Ridder for this extraordinary performance.
On August 22, Vengerov will perform at Auckland Philharmonia’s The New Zealand Herald Premier Series: Vengerov & Sibelius concert at the Auckland Town Hall, known for its superb acoustics. The concert will be conducted by Okko Kamu, a seasoned expert in Sibelius’s works, who will also collaborate with Vengerov and the Singapore Symphony after the Auckland performance.
Auckland Philharmonia’s CEO, Diana Weir, expressed enthusiasm for Vengerov’s performance, stating, “We are thrilled to feature such a distinguished soloist on the Auckland stage for this spectacular Sibelius concerto. Partnering with the NZSO to present this important artist to New Zealand audiences is fantastic.”
NZSO Acting Chief Executive Kirsten Mason added, “Maxim Vengerov is one of the true greats among virtuosos. His performance in Wellington will be an unforgettable evening for both the audience and the orchestra under the esteemed André de Ridder. This long-awaited experience for New Zealanders is truly a dream come true.”
