A family-owned business with a rich heritage has become a favored destination for musicians in Saratoga Springs.
Sixth Generation Strings, with roots tracing back to mid-1800s Europe, continues the long-standing tradition of violin making. Thomas Dunn, the current owner of the shop located on Broadway, is committed to preserving this legacy.
“Sixth Generation Strings is a sixth-generation family enterprise. We began with violin making and now aim to be a central hub for music. We offer a wide range of string instruments, from budget-friendly options to high-end models, always prioritizing quality,” Dunn explained.
Dunn takes great pride in the company’s history. The business eventually moved upstate, with Sixth Generation Strings officially opening in Saratoga Springs in 2022.
In the Spa City, the shop provides a unique “Spa Package” for instruments.
“This package includes comprehensive care for your instrument, from setting up the action and replacing strings to oiling the fingerboard—everything needed to ensure optimal playability,” Dunn said.
In addition to its own handcrafted instruments, Sixth Generation Strings offers accessories, repair services, and rentals, catering to a variety of musical needs.
