Clarinet Virtuoso Sabine Meyer Announces Retirement

by Madonna

Renowned German clarinetist Sabine Meyer has announced she will retire from the stage next year.

At 65, Meyer rose to prominence when Herbert von Karajan attempted to appoint her to the all-male Berlin Philharmonic. Despite Karajan’s support, the orchestra’s members voted overwhelmingly against her tenure, leading to Karajan’s resignation.

Following this setback, Meyer built a distinguished career as a soloist, chamber musician, and educator. She also enjoyed a long partnership with her husband, Reiner Wehle, who was a clarinetist with the Munich Philharmonic. The couple shared a professorship for 30 years at the Musikhochschule in Lübeck.
