Trumpetist David Longoria Unveils Fresh Interpretation of Purcell’s Classic with “Celebrate (Sound The Trumpet!)”

by Madonna

It’s a rare event when a classic Baroque piece gets a new twist in the Classical music scene. Trumpetist David Longoria has achieved just that with his latest release, Celebrate (Sound The Trumpet!). This innovative performance features Longoria on trumpet, accompanied by a string quintet, harpsichord, church organ, and the powerful voices of opera singers Diana Tash and AJ Teshin. The piece also benefits from the chorus of The California Chorale, based in Los Angeles.

“I aimed to infuse my Baroque-style trumpeting into this iconic piece while preserving the essence of Henry Purcell’s composition,” Longoria explains. “Combining the traditional with the adventurous made this project particularly enjoyable for me.”

The composition centers around Henry Purcell’s choral work, “Sound The Trumpet,” first performed in 1694 as part of his larger work, Come Ye Sons Of Art. The piece conveys a celebratory message, and Longoria’s rendition introduces a fresh, energetic take on the familiar tune.

Longoria’s performance, using the Bb trumpet, adds a Baroque-styled melody that revives the piece with a new vibrancy. His playing navigates the full range of the instrument with skill and grace.

“I enjoy performing music from this era because it allows for both dramatic fanfares and delicate melodic passages,” Longoria notes. “In Purcell’s time, trumpets lacked valves, making flowing melodies difficult to achieve. Today, the invention of valves enhances the sweetness and enjoyment of the music.”

The collaboration with opera singers Diana Tash and AJ Teshin has added another layer of excitement to the project. Tash, known for her acclaimed solo album Bach Woman released in 2023, and Teshin, who has worked with Tash as both a singer and producer, bring their exceptional talents to the performance.

Celebrate (Sound The Trumpet!) serves as the lead single from Longoria’s forthcoming classical debut album, set to release in Spring 2025. The album will feature other well-known trumpet works, including F. Josef Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in Eb and collaborations with European Symphony Orchestras, instrumentalists, and classical vocalists.

A Grammy-nominated artist, David Longoria has achieved international acclaim across genres such as Jazz, Gospel, World, and Dance music. He is recognized for bridging classical discipline with electronic dance music, captivating younger audiences with his artistic flair, particularly evident in his dance anthem Angels.

Celebrate (Sound The Trumpet!) quickly rose to the top of the iTunes Classical Top 200 singles chart within three days of its release and is now available on all streaming platforms.
