The headline act for the upcoming Music in the Hills (MiTH) event at The Knoll Historic Guest Farm in Hilton on Wednesday, September 11, is The Name on the Drum. This alternative, folk, and indie band offers a unique musical experience with their blend of electric guitar, acoustic elements, harmonicas, and subtle percussion, all paired with honest, thought-provoking songwriting.
The band, formed by brothers Ben and Nat Bruzas, handles everything from writing and composition to recording and production. Their music combines two distinct styles that seamlessly complement each other, adding a dynamic and varied sound to their performances.
The Name on the Drum has performed across South Africa, including their recent participation in the Just Make Music competition by Darling Brew, where they shared the stage with renowned artists like Die Heuwels Fantasties and Karen Zoid. They have also graced the stage at popular festivals such as Splashy Fen.
Another highlight of the evening is Dawn Melanie, a talented singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Her music, an eclectic mix of original pieces, draws on influences from Celtic folk, African maskandi, and contemporary folk. Known for her deep, storytelling lyrics, Melanie’s songs take listeners on a mystical journey, often weaving folklore and mythology with reflections on modern human experiences, bridging the past and present.
On stage, she is joined by Dustyn Froise on the djembe drum and Ben Bruzas on electric guitar, harmonica, and vocal harmonies, creating a rich and diverse musical experience. Melanie has performed at venues and festivals all over South Africa, including Earth Dance, Kwasuka Sukela, and Splashy Fen, where she has become a regular feature.
Her recorded work features collaborations with Ben, Dustyn, Nat Bruzas, Guy Buttery, Skippy Kubheka, and the Afreekan Sons of God. She has released a full album titled Here and Now and an EP Be The Light, which has earned international acclaim. Melanie is set to release her second album later this year.
Opening the evening’s performances is Skippy Kubheka, a Hilton-based artist who has been active since 2014. Kubheka has played bass with Mali Zulu and drums for Matt Gardiner, and is currently the frontman for the MMM…Band. This time, however, he will perform solo at MiTH, promising an exciting start to the event.
MiTH is held every second Wednesday at The Knoll Historic Guest Farm, located on Knoll Drive, Hilton. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the music kicking off at 7 p.m. Tickets are R50 at the door, with food and soft drinks available for purchase. A cash bar will also be open for attendees to enjoy.
