A guitar once owned by Noel Gallagher of Oasis, featured in the music video for the band’s debut single Supersonic, has been auctioned for more than £130,000. The Epiphone Les Paul standard electric guitar was used by Gallagher in the run-up to the recording of Oasis’s first album Definitely Maybe. It was also played during several of their early live performances, including shows at Manchester’s Boardwalk, Gleneagles in Scotland, and Water Rats in London.
Originally estimated by Sotheby’s to sell for between £60,000 and £80,000, the guitar fetched a final price of £132,000. This sale follows the recent announcement of a 2025 reunion tour by the Gallagher brothers, who had parted ways in 2009.
Before the final Definitely Maybe sessions at Sawmills Studio in 1994, Gallagher had used the guitar during recordings at Out Of The Blue Studios in Manchester and Monnow Valley Studios in Wales. The instrument was also featured on the cover art for their debut single. It was one of four guitars previously played by Gallagher, all of which were sold during Sotheby’s first-ever popular culture auction.
Other guitars also fetched high prices, including Gallagher’s Epiphone EA-250 electric guitar, which sold for £48,000, surpassing its estimated value of £20,000 to £30,000. A 1980 Gibson Flying V guitar, once owned by Johnny Marr of The Smiths and used by Gallagher during the recording of Cigarettes and Alcohol in 1994, sold for £36,000.
Katherine Schofield, head of popular culture at Sotheby’s, noted that the auction was a “fitting tribute” to mark the 30th anniversary of Definitely Maybe and the announcement of the much-anticipated Oasis reunion. She added that it was exciting to witness such “strong and competitive bidding” for these iconic guitars previously owned by Noel Gallagher.
