Error Instruments has introduced the Sound Scaper 4CV, an 8HP skiff-friendly experimental synth voice for Eurorack, developed by Paul Tas.
Many synth voices stick to classical designs, often featuring familiar elements like saw or sine waveforms, followed by tuning, pulse-width modulation (PWM), and filters. However, if you’re looking for something more unconventional, Error Instruments, led by Paul Tas, offers a range of experimental synths that break away from the norm. The new Sound Scaper 4CV is a prime example of how synth voices can deviate from traditional designs.
The Sound Scaper 4CV is an 8HP module designed for Eurorack setups and is so experimental that its sonic output can be unpredictable. It offers a combination of noise, drones, and drum sounds, making it a unique addition to any modular setup.
Paul Tas describes the Sound Scaper 4CV as being “inspired by some of the most innovative artists in the industry, such as Alva Noto, Ryoji Ikeda, and Brian Eno.” The module is designed to produce layers of metallic noise, deep drones, and soundscapes, driven by an internal low-frequency oscillator (LFO).
Tas also highlights its versatility: “It’s perfect for creating ambient soundscapes or micro drum sounds that can give your music a unique edge.” This suggests that the module incorporates a mix of synthesis techniques, likely including FM and noise, providing users with both percussive and drone sound capabilities.
The Sound Scaper 4CV features four main controls: color, LFO control, metallic pitch, and scape-shaper. These parameters can be manipulated manually or through the four corresponding CV inputs, offering a range of sound-shaping possibilities.
Additionally, the panel includes a trigger input for activating percussive sounds, a dedicated drum output, and an audio output.
As with many of Paul Tas’ creations, the inner workings of the Sound Scaper 4CV are somewhat mysterious, emphasizing exploration and hands-on experimentation over a detailed feature list.
