Mariachi Corcel de Madison is composed of a trumpet, a guitar/vihuela, two violins, and a guitarrón, creating a vibrant representation of Mexican culture in the Madison community.

Founded by Rafael Martínez-Salas and his father, the group seeks to express the diverse sounds and rhythms of Mexico, allowing Martínez-Salas to connect more deeply with his roots.

“The music of mariachi is a sign of appreciation and celebration. It’s upbeat and always fun,” Ponce-Romero said. “As more Latinos come to the city, they bring their art with them, including genres like cumbia and norteño.”

The group members emphasize that mariachi music reaches audiences far beyond their local community, resonating with people around the world.

“Guadalajara, Mexico is known as the birthplace of mariachi,” Ponce-Romero noted. “It incorporates various influences, including Spanish instrumentation and indigenous rhythms.”

Violinist Jocelyne Reál pointed out the global recognition of mariachi music.

“The first thing people think of when they hear about Mexico can be a mariachi,” Reál said. “I’m not from Mexico; I’m from Ecuador, and for me, it’s a significant impact.”

The group hopes to inspire others to explore their cultural heritage and share their rich traditions with the community.
