Paloma Faith’s piano player, Dom Pipkin, is set to showcase the vibrant sounds of New Orleans at St Leonards Kino-Teatr on October 4th at 7:30 PM.
In addition to his illustrious session work with artists like David Byrne, Ray Davies, and Morcheeba, Dom Pipkin has earned acclaim as “one of the world’s greatest exponents of New Orleans piano,” according to Blues in Britain. He first encountered the New Orleans piano style in the early 1990s and has since become a frequent performer in the city, participating in celebrated events like “Piano Night” and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Pipkin is also a prominent figure on the European blues and boogie-woogie festival circuit, having played thousands of club and theater gigs, as well as numerous radio and television appearances over nearly three decades. Jazz star Jamie Cullum has remarked, “I can’t hold a candle to this guy.”
Pipkin regularly collaborates with renowned musicians in New Orleans, sharing the stage with legends such as Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Grammy Award winner Jon Cleary often invites him to jam during his visits. During his live performances, Pipkin blends his captivating songwriting with classic blues and Big Easy favorites, creating a “steaming musical stew that has the crowd dancing and clapping for more,” according to Classic Rock Blues Magazine.
Paul Jones on Radio 2 praised Pipkin, stating he is “…lighting up the British blues and RnB scene at the moment, very very good indeed!” Paul Weller also complimented him, saying, “Love your piano playing.” A visit to one of Dom’s solo shows promises an intimate, moving, and lively experience—a true exploration of the heart and soul of New Orleans piano and beyond, as described by Kino-Teatr.
