Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, along with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and conductor Gustavo Dudamel, released the album Fandango in 2023. This album features the world premiere recording of Arturo Márquez’s mariachi-inspired concerto, Fandango for Violin and Orchestra, which was commissioned by Meyers.
In this year’s Latin GRAMMY Awards, Meyers has received nominations for:
- Best Classical Album: Fandango – Anne Akiko Meyers & Gustavo Castillo; conducted by Gustavo Dudamel; produced by Dmitry Lipay (Los Angeles Philharmonic).
- Best Classical Contemporary Composition: “Fandango” – Arturo Márquez, composer (Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel, Anne Akiko Meyers).
The Fandango concerto follows the traditional structure of three contrasting movements, with the third movement, titled “Fandanguito” (“Little Fandango”), embodying the spirit of the piece.
The album also includes the rarely heard complete version of Alberto Ginastera’s ballet Estancia. These works were recorded live at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California.
“So honored to be nominated with the electrifying Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil for our live recording produced by Dmitriy Lipay for Platoon,” Meyers shared on her Facebook page.
The full list of nominations can be found online. The 25th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards® will be broadcast live from the Kaseya Center in Miami on Thursday, November 14, 2024. The three-hour event will be produced by TelevisaUnivision, airing live on Univision, Galavisión, and ViX starting at 8 p.m. ET/PT, preceded by a one-hour pre-show at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
A graduate of The Juilliard School, where she studied under Dorothy DeLay, Felix Galimir, and Masao Kawasaki, Meyers is also a former recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant.
Previously, she received a GRAMMY Award nomination for her live recording of Márquez’s Fandango, a violin concerto composed specifically for her in 2021. This piece has already been performed over 25 times. The recording is part of her extensive catalog, which includes more than 40 releases that have become staples on classical music radio and streaming platforms.
Meyers is dedicated to commissioning new music and has collaborated closely with many prominent composers of the past fifty years, including Arvo Pärt (Estonian Lullaby), Einojuhani Rautavaara (Fantasia, his final complete work), John Corigliano (cadenzas for the Beethoven Violin Concerto; Lullaby for Natalie), Michael Daugherty (Blue Electra), Mason Bates and Adam Schoenberg (violin concertos), Jakub Ciupiński, Jennifer Higdon, Samuel Jones, Morten Lauridsen, Wynton Marsalis, Akira Miyoshi, Gene Pritsker, Somei Satoh, and Joseph Schwantner.
