Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam recently shared a nostalgic story about receiving his first electric guitar as a combined birthday and Christmas gift. In an interview, he explained how his birthday falls on December 23rd, prompting him to request that the two gifts be merged to afford the $115 guitar.
“I walked in Christmas morning and could see its silhouette, and my heart dropped. Then the lights came on, and it was a vacuum,” Vedder recalled.
His initial disappointment faded quickly when, after everyone finished unwrapping their gifts, his family surprised him with a hidden guitar. “I’m getting little chills [remembering this],” he said, expressing his joy when they revealed a guitar case.
The vacuum cleaner didn’t go unclaimed, though. With a laugh, he remarked, “How about my mom getting lucky with a vacuum for Christmas?”
Currently, Vedder is on the road with Pearl Jam, continuing their Dark Matter US tour to promote their 12th studio album, released in April this year.
