On what is likely the final hot day of the year, 69-year-old John Wardley filled the Peachland waterfront with Beatles melodies on Tuesday afternoon.
He picked up the ukulele for the first time during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, teaching himself to play. “It took me out of my shell a bit,” he shared. “It was good for me, and I enjoy it. But I’ll stick with the ukulele; I can only manage four strings. Six would be too much.”
Shirtless and glistening in the 29°C heat, Wardley played near the yacht club, where boats bobbed gently in the serene waters of Okanagan Lake, using a small amplifier but not seeking any donations. “No, no, I just do this for fun. I’m not after anything, and I find that people like it,” he explained. “I like being out here today because it’s one of the last really nice days we’re going to have.”
If Environment Canada’s special weather statement holds true, Wednesday promises an unsettling mix of thunder, lightning, heavy rain, and winds strong enough to potentially tear shingles off roofs and down power lines.
