While the progressive rock and metal scene boasts a wide variety of bands, Leprous distinctly stands out. Initially, their music aligned more closely with typical progressive styles; however, in recent years, they have embraced unconventional stylistic elements. Ironically, their “pop” approach has resonated surprisingly well with the progressive music community.
In a recent interview with Guitar World, guitarist Tor Oddmund Suhrke, who collaborates with frontman Einar Solberg on songwriting, elaborated on the band’s unique musical direction. Rather than conforming to the traditional expectations of the genre, Leprous opts for a more distinct sound.
“We don’t sound like those technical progressive bands with all the fast leads,” Tor shared. “Our music is more about emotion. We focus on mood.”
Another notable aspect of Leprous is their longevity. The Norwegian progressive sensation has undergone numerous lineup changes and has even served as the backing band for Ihsahn. However, the most significant factor is that both Tor and Einar have remained in the same band since their teenage years—a rarity in the music industry.
“It’s funny; Leprous is like an overdue youth project,” he added. “Einar and I started the band when we were 15. Most people begin in one group and then transition to others as they evolve, but we’ve never left our first band!”
