The Taylor Swift guitar that sold for $4,000 and was immediately smashed at a recent Texas auction has been resold, fetching an even higher price this time.
Gary Estes, a Texas resident, purchased the supposedly autographed guitar at a charity auction during the Ellis County Wild Game Dinner last month. Upon taking the stage to collect his prize, Estes grabbed a hammer from the auction staff and smashed the six-string instrument.
The moment quickly went viral, although Estes later clarified to NBC that his actions were merely a “joke” and that there was “nothing malicious” intended. It was later disclosed that his dissatisfaction with Swift’s endorsement of Democratic nominee Kamala Harris for President influenced his decision.
According to TMZ, the pop star’s guitar sold for $6,550 after Estes donated it back to the nonprofit foundation. The eBay listing described the item: “Man bought this signed Taylor Swift Guitar at a charity auction for $4,000, then proceeded to smash it with a hammer. The video went viral on multiple platforms worldwide.”
“He has donated the guitar back to the foundation to be sold on eBay, with proceeds going to local kids that need resources to participate in agricultural educational programs,” the listing continued.
While the guitar was advertised as having been ‘signed’ by Swift, a source from the artist’s merchandising company has denied this claim.
In related news, country music legend Keith Urban recently reflected on witnessing Swift’s potential when she opened for him during his 2009 tour.
“What she is now, she was that when she was opening for me,” Urban stated. “Her vision was way off into the future… She sees where she’s going to be, crystal clear. And that’s the kind of thing that helped her navigate through so many waters that would have killed any other artist.”
