Angela Sin Ying Chan, a violinist from Hong Kong, has made history by winning the prestigious Joseph Joachim Violin Competition in Germany. Chan, 27, became the first ever winner from Hong Kong in the competition’s history, sharing the top prize with Canadian violinist Jacques Forestier on September 28. The competition, held in Hanover and organized by the Arts Foundation of Lower Saxony, has been running every three years since 1991.

Open to violinists worldwide under the age of 33, the event has seen notable past winners, including China’s Ning Feng, who took third prize in 2003 and served as a judge this year, and Robert Chen, concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

In the final round, Chan performed Feder by German composer Enno Poppe, along with Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D major, accompanied by the NDR Radio Philharmonic. Reflecting on her win, Chan shared, “I am not that young as a musician anymore, and I really wanted to do my best.”
