He was a familiar presence at international opera houses and festivals and played a key role in promoting the music of Sibelius during the 2015 anniversary celebrations.
Segerstam’s vast discography includes numerous recordings, featuring contemporary compositions and the complete symphonies of Mahler, Sibelius, and Nielsen, among others. He was also an accomplished composer, having written 371 symphonies. From 1997 to 2013, Segerstam served as a professor of conducting at the Sibelius Academy.

Conductor Rune Bergmann, a former student of Segerstam, paid tribute to his mentor on Facebook, writing, “Very sad news that my teacher and mentor at The Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki, Leif Segerstam, has passed away. There are so many stories and memories that will live forever. Leif Segerstam was so much that it would be impossible to explain, but I would for sure never have been a conductor without him. Thank you for the music, Maestro, and rest in peace.”
Our deepest condolences go out to Segerstam’s family, friends, students, and colleagues.
