Bay Batucada Joins Global “Drums for Health” Campaign

by Madonna

Embracing the belief that music can alleviate stress, enhance mood, and even boost immune function through the release of happiness hormones, the 30-member Brazilian drumming group Bay Batucada has participated in the international “Drum for Health” campaign.

The Hawke’s Bay ensemble produced an energetic video alongside ten other bands from the United Kingdom and the United States as part of the initiative.

Bay Batucada’s president, Jared Sherriff, noted that his group is the only samba band from New Zealand involved in the Drum for Health project, expressing hope that more bands from Aotearoa will join in the future.

The campaign began in 2023 with two UK samba groups, Swan Samba and Batida Rio. Drum for Health aims to unite bands and communities around a shared mission, demonstrating that music and movement can benefit everyone.

Swan Samba reached out to the Hawke’s Bay group via Instagram, inviting them to participate in this year’s project.

Sherriff aims to leverage the internet’s power to promote Swan Samba’s vision of presenting samba drumming as a positive force in society from New Zealand.

Bay Batucada embraced the Drum for Health initiative, coming together to perform an infectious rhythm with smiles on their faces against the backdrop of Napier’s Marine Parade.

The group released their segment of the health video on their YouTube channel on World Mental Health Day, celebrated on Thursday.

When discussing the role of drumming in physical and mental health, Sherriff stated, “From a physical perspective, drumming can help to improve your coordination, balance, and muscle strength. It can also assist with memory and concentration.”

Although he couldn’t confirm if drummers are the happiest musicians, Sherriff believes “drummers have a unique advantage.”

“I have fun when I’m playing music, so it’s natural to feel happier when you’re feeling the rhythm and energy of a samba circle during band practice,” he added.

In addition to the health benefits, group drumming can ease social anxiety and foster connections, as participants have opportunities to socialize during practices and after performances.

“Making new friends as adults isn’t always easy and can be quite daunting, especially if you’re new to town and don’t know anyone,” Sherriff explained. “Groups like Bay Batucada provide a great way for people to expand their social circles.”

While anyone is welcome to try drumming with Bay Batucada, Sherriff believes that adults often struggle with embarrassment or shyness when attempting to learn new skills.

“There’s a perception that if you don’t get something perfect immediately, it’s not for you. I just can’t agree with that,” he said. “Through regular practice, we’ve seen our bandmates blossom into great musicians. Making music is a gift, and it’s a privilege to share it with the world.”

The Drum for Health initiative will run through October and November, highlighting important dates and themes such as World Make Music Day, World Teacher Day, World Mental Health Day (which also coincides with Hug a Drummer Day), International Drum Month, and International Students Day.
