Total Guitar to End Publication After 30 Years of Celebrating Guitar Culture

by Madonna

Total Guitar is set to close its doors after three decades of publication. The final print edition of the once best-selling guitar magazine in the UK and Europe will hit the shelves on October 18.

Launched in 1994 during the rise of Britpop, Total Guitar quickly set itself apart from other music magazines with its relatable style and modern approach to all things guitar. It provided a platform for both novice and experienced players to explore various aspects of guitar playing, featuring a rich mix of tutorials, interviews, and gear reviews.

Throughout its history, the magazine highlighted emerging bands such as Oasis, Blur, and Supergrass, alongside iconic artists like The Edge, Jimmy Page, Johnny Marr, and Slash on its covers.

The final issue will include an extensive retrospective cover story that looks back at some of the magazine’s most memorable moments over its 30-year run. This celebration kicks off with the very first issue, which offered a guide to Jimi Hendrix’s licks and gear, and raised the question: Is the Parker Fly the guitar of the future?

Editor Chris Bird reflected on the magazine’s closure, stating: “Total Guitar has been an institution for the guitar-playing community for 30 years, employing a massively talented and creative team of staffers and freelancers since day one. In that time, TG has probably been the broadest, most accessible guitar mag in the world. I always say we focus on putting the ‘Total’ in Total Guitar.”

“It has been an absolute privilege for me to have worked with such an amazing team for the last 17 years and to have served our readers the best tuition, reviews, features, and more in that time. Thanks for reading.”

Existing Total Guitar subscribers will be contacted and given the option for a refund or to transfer their subscription to Guitarist magazine. This announcement follows the recent news that Guitar Player will cease print publication and fully transition to an online format after 57 years. Additionally, Guitar Techniques has also announced its closure after 30 years.
