Swedish death metal icons, The Crown, have unveiled a guitar playthrough video for “Howling At The Warfield,” a track from their latest album Crown Of Thorns, available now through Metal Blade Records.
Crown Of Thorns marks a powerful follow-up to their 2021 album Royal Destroyer. The new album showcases heightened musical dynamics, partly due to the addition of drummer Mikael Norén and bassist Mattias Rasmussen in 2022, alongside the return of lead guitarist Marcus Sunesson, joining founding member Marko Tervonen and vocalist Johan Lindstrand.
Tervonen reflects on the album’s evolution: “Mikael brought back some of the wild energy reminiscent of Janne Saarenpää’s drumming, which was a great boost. Mattias, with his punk and crust background, contributed tracks like ‘I Hunt With The Devil’ and ‘Mind Collapse,’ which turned out fantastic. This album represents a significant step forward in how we approached both Cobra Speed Venom and Royal Destroyer.”
Despite celebrating 30 years in 2020, with their early years under the name Crown Of Thorns, The Crown continues to push boundaries. Their 2018 release Cobra Speed Venom reached the same heights as their 2002 milestone Crowned In Terror, while Royal Destroyer and now Crown Of Thorns maintain their fierce energy, blending fresh ideas with a nod to their roots. Reflecting on their latest work, Tervonen notes, “Every band eventually needs a self-titled album, and we did it our way with Crown Of Thorns.”
Recorded by Tervonen at Studio-MT and mixed and mastered by Jonas Kjellgren at Black Lounge Studios, Crown Of Thorns is available in multiple formats, including jewel case CD (US), limited digipak CD with three bonus tracks (EU), digital, and various vinyl color variants:
- Black + White Split (US)

- Iron-Grey Marble (EU – Limited to 500, includes bonus 7″, slip mat, and patch)
